Learn Thai Now – Inherent Vowel

When you first start learning the Thai alphabet there are a number of confusing elements, one of these is the consonant names.
Many decades ago when I started to learn the Roman alphabet as a toddler, it was A-Apple, B-Banana, that kind of thing. The big difference here though, is that the only names the consonants and vowels [in the Roman alphabet] have are the names of the sounds they make; this is the same as Thai vowels [which also are called by the sound that they make] but the consonants are different.

Learning the names of all the consonants is a challenge in itself (but this is where Learning Thai, Your Great Adventure can help you) but also, in addition to the consonant name, there is a vowel in the first part of the consonant name. The only problem is it’s unwritten, why?

Watch this video and Duangta explains all.

Learn Thai Now – Base Tones

This is a newer version of the video we recorded last year.

In the video, Duangta talks about the Thai Base Tones. Learning these is essential for getting the otnes right and getting well on the way to learning Thai.

If you’re trying to learn Thai, you need to know these.

Paperbacks Available in Thailand

You’ll be pleased to hear that both paperbacks are available in Thailand direct from the website now.

If you go to the Buy The Books page you can use the buttons there to order direct via PayPal (you no longer have to email me via the contact page anymore).

I’m still paying standard P&P within Thailand as no-one in their right mind (other than the authors of course) are going to pay almost the same price for the book in P&P charges (are they?).

Happy Days!

Happy New Year (belated)

A slightly belated Happy New Year to all our new and regular readers. We had a great week in the NE of Thailand seeing people and enjoying all the festivities.

A shame to come back to Bangkok but there you have it (nothing against Bangkok of course, it just means an end to the ‘festive’ season) onwards and upwards as they say.

It's hard work this (well, for 50% anyway)

"What do you mean blow, I am blowing!"

Short vowel: สระ -ิ

If you’re trying to learn Thai at the How To Read Thai website, you’ll be pleased to hear that there’s a new post over there dealing with the short vowel, สระ -ิ.

This post concludes the breakdown of the sample sentence given. We plan to put more on in due course, plus video’s and other media but it all takes time. The recent Fantastico upgrade screwed the site up for a day and entering Thai script in the manner that I do, with character formatting to simplify the explanation process, so that you can easily follow it, isn’t a quick process.: especially in a WordPress site.

Even writing it in something like MS Word is a pain (isn’t it just!) and as soon as you try and bring it form there across to WordPress…if you know anything about Word then you’ll know the problems and constraints we’re faced with.

Last Day for 30% Discount

Just a reminder that today is the last day for the 30% discount. After tonight it goes down to 20% (within Thailand only) as mentioned before.
